They have a life span of 3 to 5 years in captivity and slightly less in the wild. They exhibit sexual dimorphism. They have 23 pairs of chromosomes, including one pair of chromosomes, the same number as in humans. They are well developed and capable of independent existence without further parental care by the time they are born.
The guppy is an omnivorous animal and eats a wide range of organic matter that is available in the water. The guppy mainly feeds on algae and brine shrimp, and often eat particles of food from the water that have been left by a larger fish. Also, the Guppy Fish has been introduced mainly as a method of mosquito prevention as it eats the mosquito larva before they are able to fly, therefore slowing down the spread of malaria. They also have the tendency to survive for weeks without feeding.
