Goldfish were domesticated around 2,000 years ago. They are recognised as a symbol of fortune and luck. If we look at the history of the fish, it is quite old. We should be thankful for China because according to verified data, they were earlier found in 960 AD in China. Over years and centuries, the fish have been bred fuser by Chinese, then by Japanese that finally introduces highly evolved varieties of goldfish.

Misconception about goldfish

There is one common misconception found amongst people is that koi is the giant goldfish, but the reality is that koi is another type of domesticated carp, they are a distinct species. Another widespread misconception is that people usually consider that goldfish are always gold. If we look at the history, then Prussian carp from which goldfish were formerly subjugated are of full grey-green pigment. But with the years of mutations and breeding moved dull grey-green short fish into a highly developed, gold colour fish. That can catch everyone’s attention at the very first moment.

Different and eye-catching variety

You may be shocked and fascinated at the same time because there are over 100 varieties of goldfish. There are many goldfish that are found only in their home countries. You cannot see them in countries like Europe or America.

 If you want to keep goldfish, then it would be right for beginners to start with varieties like Moors, Fantails, and Comets that are considered a cheaper variety. But if you already have the experience, then you can also lean towards more exotic types like Water Bubble Eyes, Calestials, and Lionheads. 

Know about goldfish food before keeping them

We all are aware of the type omnivorous. Omnivorous are those species who can eat plants as well as an animal-based meal. Goldfishes are also omnivorous because, for their healthy digestive system, they must eat both plants and animal-based foods.

But it is equally important to consider or analyse the amount of plant or animal-based food because their requirements are different for different seasons and it also depends on whether you are planning to breed your goldfish. It may lead to death if you feed them without thinking; overfeeding of dry food is one of the biggest reasons for their deaths.

How to take care of goldfish

Taking care of fishes is considered to be a challenging task as the needs of each fish are different, and if you are not able to take care of them properly, then it can also result in their death.

Here are some of the few requirements of goldfish that will help you to understand them better if you are planning for keeping them.

  • The temperature change for Them survival is to be gradual. They can survive in freezing water, but only for a short period. They can also survive when water temperature ranges close to 100°F, but keep this in mind to change temperature regularly. The best water temperature for their better growth and survival should be between 55°F and 80°F.
  • The tank size for a pair of fancy goldfish will be a minimum of 30 gallons. If you have five fancy goldfish, then you will require a tank size 60-gallon tank.
  • They are regarded as one of the most tolerant fishes because they can endure in different water conditions, but they can’t survive in low dissolved oxygen levels.
